== Workshop “Neutrons and X-rays meet biology“, Berlin (Germany), 25-27 February, 2009 ==
'''Scope:'''

From Wednesday 25 to Friday 27 February, 2009 a workshop on “Neutrons and X-rays meet biology”, will be held at the Helmholtz Zentrum Berlin. This workshop is devoted to the relation between structure, dynamics and function in biological systems.
The workshop will give an up-to-date overview of the results obtained by both neutron and X-ray scattering as well as combinations of the two techniques, and it will demonstrate that the combination of neutron and X-ray probes will deeply broaden our knowledge on the structural and dynamical properties of biological systems.
The workshop intends to bring together experts in the fields of neutron and X-ray techniques as well as specialists in bio-modelling, biochemical and biological characterization methods and will offer opportunities to initiate and/or intensify collaborations between experimental and theoretical scientists working in the various areas of biology.
The program of the workshop will include invited lectures, talks and a poster session. To stimulate discussions and to further support scientific exchange, the posters will be displayed for the entire duration of the workshop. A visit of facilities at BENSC and BESSY will be an integral part of the programme.
(compiled from the CCP4 BB July 2008)

1. The ALS BCSB beamlines http://bcsb.lbl.gov/beamlines.htm have a mail-in type program name collaborative crystallography on beamlines 5.0.2 (MAD) and 5.0.1 (Se-SAD/ Fixed
Remote access is currently available on the sector 5 stations (5.0.1
5.0.2 and 5.0.3) for PRT members only. ALS 4.2.2 beamline has remote capability

2. Beamline 3BM1 at the Australian Synchrotron http://www.synchrotron.org.au has full remote access available for users. We use the same Blu-Ice gui as SSRL and use the SAM robot.
When 3ID is available for general user program (2009) it will also have full remote access capabilities.

3. BNL / NSLS Mail-in program http://www.px.nsls.bnl.gov/, where three scientists spend about one full-time equivalent of effort, employing about one full-time beamline among the six PXRR beamlines.

BESSY operates one of the world’s most modern synchrotron radiation sources for VUV and soft X-rays, delivering high quality synchrotron radiation to more than 1.300 international users annually. Among other research activities, BESSY in collaboration with the Freie Universität Berlin operates three experimental stations for macromolecular crystallography (http://www.mx.bessy.de).
Modern synchrotron based beamline operation requires a persistent quality control of the produced synchrotron beam, which is delivered to the experimental station. Macromolecular crystallography beamlines have an additional demand for a highly available and stable X-ray beam. Therefore we are developing beam diagnostics systems for X-ray beamlines.
Further activities are defined in software developments to control these devices and other scientific instruments as well as the support of the operation of the BESSY-MX beamlines.
Candidates are expected to hold a Ph.D. in physics and have experiences in scientific instrumentation- and software development. Furthermore, a proven expertise in synchrotron-based instrumentation is highly desirable.
