There's a program called zanuda (by Andrey A. Lebedev) accessible at http://www.ysbl.york.ac.uk/YSBLPrograms/index.jsp which is meant to find symmetry elements . This allows one to solve a structure in P1 and then decide afterwards what the symmetry really is.
