BESSY operates one of the world’s most modern synchrotron radiation sources for VUV and soft X-rays, delivering high quality synchrotron radiation to more than 1.300 international users annually. Among other research activities, BESSY in collaboration with the Freie Universität Berlin operates three experimental stations for macromolecular crystallography. Modern synchrotron based beamline operation requires a persistent quality control of the produced synchrotron beam, which is delivered to the experimental station. Macromolecular crystallography beamlines have an additional demand for a highly available and stable X-ray beam. Therefore we are developing beam diagnostics systems for X-ray beamlines.

We are seeking a

Beamline Scientist /Ref. E-MX 08-2

to strengthen the BESSY-MX research team and to take a leading role in the development of the MX-beamlines diagnostics system at the next possible date. The work comprises the testing, operation and further development of X-ray beam diagnostics in close collaboration with international partners at other European synchrotrons. Further activities are defined in software developments to control these devices and other scientific instruments as well as the support of the operation of the BESSY-MX beamlines. Candidates are expected to hold a Ph.D. in physics and have experiences in scientific instrumentation- and software development. Furthermore, a proven expertise in synchrotron-based instrumentation is highly desirable. We are offering an initially three-years contract. The salary will be based on German Federal employment scale TVöD. Enquiries should be directed to Dr. Uwe Mueller, (+49 30 6392-4974), E-mail: uwe.mueller_at_bessy.de.

Women are especially encouraged to apply. Handicapped persons will be given preference to other applicants with the same qualifications.

E-mail applications only comprising a single pdf-document will be accepted as well. To apply via mail please send a cover letter with the reference code and your complete application documents including a detailed curriculum vitae, a publication list and contact details of referees to:
