- a simple, non-compressed data frame format is the SMV file format
- a self-documenting data frame format, which supports compression, and is under GPL/LGPL license, is the CBF format. imgCIF/CBF is a format for image data, such as synchrotron diffraction images. CBFlib is a software package supporting the imgCIF/CBF format.
