The Institute of Biotechnology is an independent research organisation within the University of Helsinki. The Research program for Structural Biology and Biophysics includes an X-ray Crystallography Unit equipped with an automated protein crystallisation facility and inhouse X-ray generator, in addition to cell culture and protein purification facilities. The unit hosts two active research groups. The Heikinheimo group has an ongoing project studying aspects of lysosomal protein targeting where the current position will be filled.
A postdoctoral research fellowship (financed by the Norwegian Research Council, project title "Postgenome glycomics: The structures, interactions, and functions of complex sugars attached to proteins and lipids") is available at the Department of Chemistry, The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Oslo, in the group of Professor Dr. Ute Krengel.

For 12 months with effect from 1.4.2008 to 31.3.2009 (project).
The position is available immediately, but the starting date can be agreed on (latest January 1st 2009). In special circumstances, the candidate may be employed as a researcher.

The postdoctoral researcher will join a multidisciplinary project studying the biology of lysosomal proteins through structural and cell biological methods. The work will involve molecular biology, cell culturing and protein isolation in addition to crystallisation and structure determination of lysosomal proteins. The final focus of the work may be adjusted based on the interest and expertise of the individual. The person will also be involved in the everyday advising for the students working in the project.
The project will be in the field of protein crystallography, with a focus on protein-carbohydrate interactions of medically relevant systems. The project will likely involve the collaboration with other glycobiology groups in Oslo, which are part of the GlycoNor consortium (http://www.imbv.uio.no/forskning/glyconor/), but may also involve international collaborations. Further details concerning the project will be discussed and agreed on before project start.

You should have a PhD degree and suitable background in protein crystallography or in protein sorting and cell glycobiology or life cycle and biology of lysosomes. We assume knowledge of basic methods in protein chemistry and molecular biology. Experience on independent research projects is a plus.
The work will be pursued in a new lab in Oslo (established 2005), which is state-of-the-art and includes a Rigaku Micromax-007HF X-ray diffractometer, temperature-controlled crystallization rooms as well as bacterial culturing facilities and protein purification equipment (ÄKTA purifier).

The salary for a post doctoral researcher is based on level 5 of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel. With the salary component based on personal work performance the overall salary range is 2 466-3 600 euro per month.
The candidate should be determined to enter a challenging project, like to work independently, but also be a good team-player. She/he should preferentially have experience in all aspects of protein crystallographic work, including solid practical experience in protein purification and crystallization. Experience with membrane proteins can be an advantage. The candidate is further expected to actively take part in the maintenance of the X-ray equipment and crystallographic software.

The application should include a complete cv including your education and degrees obtained, prior work experience and contact information for at least one referee.
Details concerning the application procedure can be found at
