Genre
From GameLabWiki
The term genre means in its broadest sense a classification of content in literature, arts and media. There are many approaches when it comes to genre theory. Here we will define one certain way for characterizing genre as an always changing category, that can mostly be described historically. Looking at genre not only as a way of marking the style of games, but also as a certain feature a group of games share with each other. Therefore a game can be sorted into more than one genre ( list of game-genres) . The term genre can be associated with the term of the "discourse"[1] following the french philosopher Michel Foucault. He defines a discourse over its own positivity, meaning everything that has been said to a certain topic: "Das Apriori der Positivitäten ist nicht nur das System einer zeitlichen Streuung; es ist selbst ein transformierbares Ganzes."[2] A discourse and thus also a genre can change their meaning over time. Through certain degrees of disruption new genres can evolve. The figure of the "parasite"[3] becomes productive for that kind of thinking with the interference.
